A Note on the Closure of the CIBSE Software Verification Assessment (SVA) Scheme
Tuesday, August 11, 2026
CIBSE Certification Ltd has confirmed that, following a formal review, the Software Verification Assessment (SVA) scheme will close. No new SVA applications are being accepted, and the scheme will formally close upon expiry of the last remaining certificate. CIBSE has stated this decision reflects the scheme's alignment with certification standards and its long-term commercial sustainability within CIBSE Certification, and is unrelated to the technical performance of any individual software product, including ElectricalOM.
We want to be clear and direct with our users about what this means, and what it does not mean, for ElectricalOM.
What this does not change ElectricalOM's calculation methodology was never dependent on SVA for its accuracy or its compliance with the standards. The scheme provided a useful, independent point of reference for the industry, but the underlying engineering rigour behind our calculations has always been ours: developed, maintained, and validated in-house under our own technical governance.
The technical development of the SVA Electrical design tests themselves was led by our Director, Demetris Monoyios PhD, and independent consultant Spencer Henry FICWCI EngTech TMIET, a UK Expert involved in standards development.
It is also worth being clear about what SVA certification actually covered. The scheme's testing addressed a limited subset of ElectricalOM's calculation engine, principally;
cable sizing,
protective device coordination,
and demand/diversity calculations.
It did not extend to the full breadth of the software's capability, which spans earthing and fault-level analysis, voltage drop and power quality, short-circuit and I²t coordination, arc-flash calculations, and dedicated modules for EV charging, PV/renewables, and battery storage, among many others, each built against their own relevant standards calculations and guidance.
SVA closure therefore has a narrower bearing on ElectricalOM's overall assurance than its name might suggest.
Every calculation module in ElectricalOM is built against the wider body of British and international standards. It draws on, reviewed and updated amendments when published, and is subject to our own internal verification process, quite separately from any third-party certification scheme. That process continues unchanged.
What has changed With the SVA scheme closing, CIBSE Certification will no longer issue, renew, or maintain any SVA certification. Any SVA certificate previously associated with ElectricalOM will be removed from the CIBSE register upon expiry, in line with CIBSE's own published position. This is an administrative and commercial decision on CIBSE Certification's part, not a reassessment of ElectricalOM.
We have also confirmed our position with CIBSE Certification regarding our proprietary calculation methodology and materials used during the SVA process, which remain, and have always remained, the intellectual property of Modecsoft. That position has been formally acknowledged by CIBSE Certification.
What this means for you No action is required. There is no change to how ElectricalOM performs its calculations, no change to its compliance basis, and no reduction in the standard of technical assurance behind the software. If your own internal procurement or compliance documentation currently references SVA certification for ElectricalOM, we would recommend updating it to reflect the scheme's closure, and we are happy to provide supporting information on our verification and quality assurance processes directly, on request.
At present, no directly equivalent third-party verification scheme exists for electrical design calculation software in the UK market. We are actively reviewing alternative routes to independent verification and will update our users as soon as a suitable option is confirmed
If you have any questions about this update or about ElectricalOM's compliance basis more generally, please get in touch with us directly.
