A motor starter component is used to model a motor circuit consisting of a motor starter and an electric motor.

Depending on the motor starter used, the symbol may differ.

Motor Starter component is very similar to any final circuit with a motor, however, it splits the circuit into two sections unlike a final circuit.

  • Motor Starter part
  • Final Circuit part

This gives the opportunity to the user to define different conditions and parameters for each part of the circuit independently e.g. different cables, installation methods, etc.

The motor part is the same as a final circuit includes a motor except the circuit protective device and Motor starter settings sections are disabled. For further details about motor settings please refer to Motor Settings section.

Circuit protection is handled by the motor starter part of the circuit, however, it is still possible to enable the circuit protection option from the final circuit part and insert a device at this point by ticking the Use tick box under Circuit edit Tab, Protective Devices subordinate tab.

Motor starter part defines the overload protection parameters of the circuit. Overload protection parameter can be modified under Motor starter section of the Circuit edit Tab. Further, user may choose which parameter to use for cable cross section selection. If the "Use O/L rating for cable sizing" is ticked, ElectricalOM will use the overload rating to size the cable, otherwise rating of the protective device set at Protective Devices tab will be used.

If the overload parameter set by the user is lower than the design current of the circuit, ElectricalOM will display a warning both with the motor starter and the final circuit parts of the circuit.

Even though the overload current can be over the over current protective device rating, it is expected to be lower than the current carrying capacity of the conductor.
